Click on the linked resources to get a better understanding of both apostrophe and odes. Once you have read about these two types of poetry you will complete the following post:
1. Compare & contrast apostrophe to odes. Use an example from a poem to best demonstrate your point.
2. Choose an ode and a poem that demonstrates apostrophe (some examples are linked below). Analyze the author's purpose in writing an ode versus using apostrophe. Are both poetic devices just different means to the same end or do the function to achieve a different overall meaning/purpose in the poem?
3. Write your own ode. It may be an ode to whatever you choose, however, remember that you are aiming to achieve the same level of literary merit as the poetry we read. This should be AP level writing and effort.

the difference between apostrophes and odes are that apostrophes in poetry are mainly used as a figure of speech while odes are used to celebrate the main person setting or idea of the poem

They both were written to achieve the same purpose but they do it differently. An ode to music is a poem praising music to somebody else. Twinkle twinkle little star is a poem addressing stars about stars.

Apostrophe and ode poetry are both similar and different. They both address a concept like a person, things, animals and ideas. An apostrophe poem addresses concepts that cannot respond like God, love, time and etc. An ode poem is meant to be sung and usually praises whatever the poem is talking about. An example of apostrophe in a poem is, “O holy virgin! clad in purest white,/Unlock heav'n's golden gates, and issue forth”(Blake L1-2 ). William Blake uses apostrophe because he is addressing an allegedly religious figure, the Virgin Mary. An example of ode in a poem is, Twinkle, twinkle, little star/How I wonder what you are./ Up above the world so high,/Like a diamond in the sky”(Taylor L1-4). Jane Taylor uses ode because, she is praising the stars in a way that it can be sung.
These forms of poetry are not just different means to the same end. In an ode poem they usually praise things meanwhile in an apostrophe poem the concepts it address do not always get praised. An apostrophe poem can talk badly about its concept.
My own ode:
Education you are the key to success.
You are the tool that has made many of our top humans the best.
Many consider you the weapon that has powered many,
You are a tool that is accessible to any.

Apostrophe is a figure of speech in which the poet addresses an absent person, an abstract, idea or thing. An ode poem that addresses and often celebrate a person, place thing idea.They are similar because they both address the same tings like people and ideas. For example ''o cunning Love'' with tears thou keep'st me blind...
An example of ode is ''Ode to a Nightinagle and ''To Autumn'' . Both poetic devices are different means to the same end.

Oh how much i admire basketball
It helps me achieve my goals
So many people want to be the best at it
But get left out in the cold
On the court it helps me focus on life

1.) Obviously, both odes and apostrophes are forms of poetry. Odes are extremely long compared to apostrophes. “Wild nights-Wild nights,” which is an apostrophe, only has twelve lines while “Intimidations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood,” an ode, has over one hundred lines.
ReplyDelete2.) An author may write an ode to express a deeper and more complex feeling while an author may write an apostrophe to express one short topic and focus solely on that one topic. They function to achieve a different overall meaning/purpose in the poem.

An Ode is often ceremonious lyric poems that addresses and often celebrates a person. A apostrophe is a figure of speech in which the poet addresses an abstract idea or a thing. "thou still unranish'd bride of quietness , thou foster child of silence and slow time " -John Keats used a ode instead of a apostrophe to celebrate a specific thing. The two poetic devices show/describe the same meaning in a poem . They are just different ways to write it.

Alexuas oh Alexuas how people may talk even the family members that walk around you everyday. Alexuas oh Alexuas how wise you've become how alive you are. Alexuas oh Alexuas this ode to you is not conceited because your the only one I believe in. 1) A apostrophe is a figure of speech, and it addresses a person, but have similar examples compared to odes. It is very similar to odes, except for the fact that it describes instead of shouting it out/ celebrate it. Also, odes are when you address or celebrate a person, poem or a thing. For example, a ode can be given out to a favorite object, or it can be given out to a favorite poem. To add, from "Wild Nights-Wild Nights!", "Were I with thee, wild nights should be, our luxury!", (Dickinson, lines 2-4), illustrates that the author is talking to them, and she is worshipping it.
2) The author's purpose for writing "Ode on a Grecian Urn" is to celebrate it and to address the urn. If the author would have used apostrophe, he would just address the urn instead of celebrating it. Both poetic devices functions to achieve the overall meaning.
3) Ode to my Mom
Oh mom, my precious mother
How I loved you so
You slipped away from me
But you are always in my heart forever
Oh mom, you were my best friend
You were the only one who understood me
We used to share laughs together
Now I can laugh no more

A apostrophe and ode are different but also similar. An apostrophe adresses a absent person , abstract idea such as love , hope and faith. An ode celebrates a person, place, idea or thing. A ode praises a concept in a way. A apostrophe and a ode are similiar because they are both describing something. The purpose of a poet writing an ode is to celebrate in "Ode to a Blizzard" by Tom Disch the poet wrote an ode to a blizzard.A poets purpose of writing an apostrophe is to adress a concept like in "Death, be not Proud" by John Donne the author is adressing the abstarct idea of death for example when he says " Die not poor Death, nor yet canst thou/kill me" ( John Donne L6-L7)
Both poetic devices achieve a different overall meaning/purpose in the poem because a ode is prasing something while an apostrophe is pointing a concept out which makes the readers think.

Odes and Apostrophes are the same because they are both poetry. They both involve people, places, ideas or things. Apostrophes, however, does it only if it is abstract. Odes are usually songs of praise.
Odes and Apostrophes are like two different routes to the same destination. Like the the apostrophe "Death, be not Proud" it's saying to not be proud when dead. And the ode " Ode to Joy" is saying to be happy that you're happy.

1). Apostrophes and Odes are different types of poetry. However, they have differences from each other. Apostrophes address and absent person, and abstract idea or an absent thing. For example Martin deserved much respect because he has done lots for African Americans. Ode is a ceremonious poem that celebrates a person, place, thing, or idea. For example Martin, ooh the wonderful great one, the mighty leader, hail King.

The example of the ode poem was to example how life is something should celebrated. The example of the apostrophe poem was to explain how death is going something we all have to endeavor. Death is not supposed to be a bad thing. Both of the poems are not exactly different from each other. They both function in a similar way to bring the purpose forward.

In comparing apostrophe to odes,
apostrophe is a type of figure speech where a person or a writer addresses
an absent person and an abstract idea or a thing. For example "Roll on thou
dark and deep blue ocean." from "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" by Lord Byron
and "Ingratitude! thou marble-hearted fiend, / More hideous when thou

Shakespeare. Odes is when its giving a saying or celebrating a person,

Poetic Apostrophes and Odes are very similar but have a couple differences. An apostrophe “ is a figure of speech in which the poet addresses an absent person, an abstract idea, or a thing.”( http://grammarist.com/) An ode “often ceremonious lyric poem that addresses and often celebrates a person, place, thing, or idea.”(http://www.poetryfoundation.org/) They both address a person, place, thing and idea. The difference is that an apostrophe is a figure of speech a addresses abstract concepts/ideas like love,God,Faith etc. A example of an apostrophe is in William Shakespeare’s “One Hundred and Forty-eighth Sonnet” Shakespeare addresses the concept of love “ O ME! what eyes hath love put in my head/ O cunning Love! with tears thou keep’st me blind,/ Lest eyes well-seeing thy foul faults should find!” The other difference is that an ode is a poem to celebrate something like a person,sport, or idea which can be a lyric poem that is sung. An example of an ode is Ralph Waldo Emerson’s ‘Ode to Beauty” Emerson celebrates/praises the concept of beauty “Who gave thee, O Beauty/When first my eyes saw thee/I found me thy thrall”. Both of these poetic devices achieve the similar things. They address a person, place, thing and idea in their own way and at the end their purpose is to deepen the meaning of their topic. That is why although apostrophes and odes have different techniques they both have a similar purpose at the end.

Ode to My Life
Oh dear life of mine
the things you have put me through.
There has been horrible very bad days but i don’t regret them.
There has also been happy days .
The bad days have kept me strong and I have learned from.
The good days have kept me motivated.
Oh life the things that have happened.
Things that will never be forgotten.
Oh life how thankful I am.
To know I am alive and that at the end
I have a good life.
A life that knocks me down a couple times
but always helps me back up.

1.) The similarity between ode and apostrophe is that they both have the purpose of addressing a thing, person or idea. The difference is that ode is based of the lengths of the poem while apostrophe is based of uf figure of speech.
2.) The poem I chose was "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and the ode that demonstrates apostrophe is Stanza 4, Line 2-3: " To what green altar, O mysterious priest/ Lead'st thou that heifer lowing at the skies. Both poetic devices have a different meaning, but meet the same end because they both look at subject in an abstract way and they both explain the subject in a vivid and very descriptive way to grab the attention of the reader.
3.) "No One Knows"
O Everything dies at some point
But why does it have to be
Soon?
Why not later?
O Everything has its way of action
But, why does it have to
Have a purpose
To do so?
Contrary to belief
It shouldn't have purpose
To stand out
And be what it
Wants to be.
Thou never know that
O might have lived
And did
What it did without
A purpose?
Shall we judge and
Bicker on what
It could've, should've or would've done
Or just let faith decide
And leave it alone.
For no one shall
Know what is true purpose.
