ReplyDeleteThe poem fire and ice really did attract my attention. They contrast strongly from each other. Fire is hot and ice is cold. But both can cause mass destruction. Also, i recognize the words from a classic song i would sing. It described their love for each other. The connotation of the word fire is something the spread quickly and destroys everything in its path. It burns down everything. The denotation of the word fire is something the is caught in flames due to inflammable items. In today's society, it basically means the same thing. Like ahhhhh, its a fire! The word came from the middle ages in the Great Britain. It meant the same thing now. But, depending on the situation or the context is was being, can determine whether the word is good or bad. Its important to know the connotation and denotation so that readers can have a better and deeper understanding of the text. If you don't then you won't understand! Its like speaking to someone in French when they only know Spanish!

The word I chose was "tender" from the poem "Sharking of the Birdcage" by CAConrad. The reason I chose this word is because I noticed that the meaning of tender that I know, is different from the content used inside the poem. To me I thought of the word tender to be like easy to eat, associated w/ the food chicken tenders. The actual definition of the word is "showing gentleness and concern or sympathy." The way that the author used it in his poem was saying how whoever he gave his heart to, should show compassion towards him. Over time the word tender changed by meaning. It went from meaning sympathy to describing how a certain food is made. It is important to understand the connotation of the word because if you don't know it, you might not understand the content the speaker/writer was trying to use.

I chose the word curse from the poem ''Cross'' by Langston Hughes. I chose this word because it has different meanings to it. I also decided to choose the word curse because it can be interpret in different ways by a person. The definition of the word curse is a formula or a charm intended to cause such misfortune to another. Curs is the Latin word meaning a prayer or harm befall one. Old English cursian from the source of curse meaning to swear profanely is from the early 13th century. Words related are cursed and cursing. It is important that we understand the conotation and denotation of a word because it gives a better understanding of what words can truly mean and not a guess based off an opinion.

I chose the word "cursed from the poem "Cross" by Langston Hughes. I chose this word because this is the word that appears most in the poem, so it must have a lot of signifigance in the poem. It is crucial to understand this word because of that reason. It's denotation is "the expression of a wish that misfortune, evil, doom, etc., befall a person, group, etc." It's connotation is like using innapropriate language and cuss words of the sort. This word dates back to 1250-1300 in the Middle English. Other denotations of this word are a manner of witch-craft, misfortune, or a cause of misfortune. It is important to understand denotations and connotation so it is easier to understand words formally and informally.

"Tree Heart/True Heart" really spoke out to me. It was describing the difference between a real heart and a heart that is not a heart. For this poem, I chose the word 'springs' because this word have a limited amount of meanings. Also, the meanings can be the same, but either reworded, or put in other words. For example, the word 'springs' can be a season or a toy. But, this word is used in a way in which you can look up the word in a dictionary. The connotated definition for this word word is: a plastic or metal toy or object that you can play with, or it is a object that can be used to build toys with or can be used for boxsprings. The denotated definition for the word is: to leap or to emerge suddenly. This word was used in many different words in many languages such as French, Dutch, Old English and more. To add, it is important to understand the connotations and the denotations of words so that you can use the big, bold words properly without embarrassing yourself in front of people.
I chose My Great Grandmother's Bible by Spencer Reece . The connotation of the word dead in the poem is to be deceased or forgotten . The connotation of the word dead has developed overtime as generations progressed. The dead has become a way describe someone excessively laughing. The denotation is dull or directly. The importance of understanding denotation and connotation of words in literary writing so that you can grasp a better understanding of the piece.

In the poem "Tree Heart/True Heart" by Kay Ryan (B. 1945) the word I chose

sunshine, makes you have thoughts on leafs.Inthe whole poem the word
springs me the true heart of a bright person. In the poem it says "I say no
more springs without you" out means that without her in his life there's no she on his eyes. Connotations is bright, the sun or beauty.Denotations is to become warped or split or treat for someone else. It's important to know connotations and demotations because for you to be able to know what your meaning is and other meaning that's different from yours.
The word that interested me was prudent in the poem ''Faith is a fine invention''.The poem said:''Faith is a fine invention when gentlemen can see but microscopes are prudent in an emergency''.The word is important to the poem because the poem is about the importance of faith and technology. The denotation of prudent is acting with or showing care and thought for the future. The connotation means wise or smart
ReplyDeleteI chose the word bears from the poem "There is no Frigate like a Book". The connotation of the word bears is to tell the reader what a human can do or take. The root word of bears is bear. The denotation of bear is to bring forth or give birth to. When the word bear is mentioned, usually the thought of an actual bear pops up. In this poem, the poet uses this word to tell the reader what a human can take or do. It is important to distinguish connotation and denotation so that readers may understand the poetic as well as the poem better.

In "Break of Day" by John Donne the word "night" has a different connotation outside of its denotation. It is important for one to know the denotations and connotations of words in poetry because, poetry often has a minimal amount of words and each word is essential to understanding the author's purpose. I chose the word night because it is referred to several times in the poem. The word "night" seemed essential to understanding the rest of the poem since it was repeated so often. The denotation of the word "night" is the period of darkness. As referred to in the poem, the word night is representative of the time that one would lie down with their lover. According to http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=night, the word "night" is associated with the Greek, Latin, Old Irish and Sanskrit language. The word "night" does not have several denotations but does have plenty connotations. "Night" can represent the time that one would sleep, a time of danger, a time to lie down with ones lover and etc. The connotations of certain words such as "night" develop when others begin to use the word in different contexts.

The root word is mist and has multiple meanings but all agree on unchanged or tie back into it. It has multiple connotations in such different nationalities which include Dutch, Greek,Swedish etc. I got my definition and extra info from Google and http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=mist.

In the poem"Ethics" a word that caught my attention was eschews used in the quote "Linda, the teacher would report, eschews the burdens of responsibility". I chose this word because it is a word that I haven't seen or heard before the way it is spelled and written also interested me. It isn't a common word you hear or see on a daily bases which is why the word eschews interested me. Understanding the meaning of the word is important because it can affect the way you see the rest of the poem or it can have an important part to the whole poem. Knowing what the word eschew means helps you see part of the bigger picture of the poem of how students/adolescents try to avoid responsibility which is a part of the big meaning of the poem "Ethics". The denotation of the word is "deliberately avoid using;abstain from". Some connotations are to avoid and escape. The history of the word eschew is from "middle English, from Anglo-French eschiver of Germanic origin ;akin to Old High German sciuhen to frighten off. Known use of the word was in the 14th century." (www.Merriam-webster.com) The connotations of the word changed over time because technically the word eschew doesn't just mean to avoid something it is avoiding something because you find it morally wrong or that you have chosen to avoid something for a deeper purpose. Through the years that real meaning has changed now eschew is used simply as avoiding something it's not used with a deeper meaning anymore. It is important to understand both the connotation and denotation of a word because you may be saying a word and the way you are using it is wrong and it's real definition is the opposite of how you are using it. Also a word may have multiple denotations which would means there is more than one connotation and you may use them wrong. That is why it is important to know the connotation and denotation of a word like eschew from the poem "Ethics" by Linda Pastan.

In the poem "My love swears that she is made of truth" by William Shakespeare there was 1 word that caught my attention. That was was when the author said "That she might think me some untutored youth". What caught my attention was the words untutored and youth. The use of these words together gave me the bigger meaning of this poem. Untutored does not have a connotation, simply because the words is not used in urban world. But the denotation of this word is uneducated or ignorant. And the word youth has never really been changed. Its always has the same meaning which is young or adolescent. But the word it self is named after a island just off the northwest of the Caribbean islands and was apart of Cuba during the 1925. The island was called Island of Youth. Once I found this definition I was able to figure out how the woman that the author was speaking about really feels about him.

In this poem "Sharking of Bird Cage" written by CaConrad. One word that I found really intersecting and strange/weird is the word "Quaking." I found this word kind of funny and strange because I thought the writer was referring like a quaking noise from a duck or a person talking to much that it sounds like a duck, but when I did my research for the word "Quaking." What CaConrad really meant was a person who shake or shudder with fear.
And I got this definition in dictionary.com.
