Forms of Poetry

Just like there are many different genres of fiction, there are many different forms of poetry. In today's post you will be exploring three of those types and analyzing the purpose of each type.
For sources beyond your book you may follow the following links:
Free Verse Poetry
Prose Poem
Lyric Poem (Note that Ode's are examples of Lyric poems, as well.)

In your post define each type of poem. What are the main differences between each type and main similarities? Search for an example of each type of poem. Analyze the overall purpose of the poem and how the FORM aids the poet in achieving their purpose.

Challenge: Choose a form and write a poem in that style.

  4. A lyric poem is when is poem is a poem that's contains lyrics from a song. These become important because it can be useful to express the author's feelings easily. Prose poems are poems that's can tell a story in a shorter way. The big difference is that the poems has no beat to you have to read it to. In a free poem the poem can be any way you want it to be it does not have to set up a certain way.

    Free verse is poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm and does not rhyme with fixed forms. Prose poetry is a story without rhythm. Lyrical poetry is when the poet, poet’s persona, or another speaker expresses personal feelings. The difference between the types of poetry is that free verse doesn’t rhyme and doesn’t follow regular meter, prose poetry is simply a story in poetry form that doesn’t rhyme, and lyrical poetry is an expression of personal feelings. Emily Dickinson’s, I Felt a Funeral in my Brain, is an example of lyrical poetry. Dickinson is expressing her personal feelings with the funeral she has in her head. Brenda Hillman’s, White Fir Description, is an example of prose poetry. Hillman is telling a story throughout the poem. Carl Sandburg’s, Fog, is an example of free verse since it doesn’t follow the regular meter and none of the lines rhyme.

    I sit in Ms. Nicholson’s AP class.
    I don’t understand things from this lesson.
    I wrote a prose poem since it’s the easiest.
    And I don’t have to be creative.
    It’s almost time to go
    So, this poem is over.

    A lyric poem s when the poet express its personal feelings and originally meant for music accompaniment. A free verse poem is when the poet has a poem with no limitations and doesn't rhyme or anything. A prose poem is like a story turning into a poem and doesn't has a rhyme in it. The main similarity is that a lyric poem that a free poem do not have any rhyme limitations and a prose poem do not have any either. The difference is that a lyric poem does sometimes have a rhyme structure and tells the poets feelings. In a prose poem its just any story that is made and turn into a poem so it its really made by a poet its just turn into a poem. For a Lyric poem ''Vita Nova'' and the purpose is her expressing her feelings from her childhood and expressing how beautiful and how good things were.

  7. 1. Free verse poetry is poetry free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm and does not rhyme with fixed forms in which poets can use alliteration, rhyme, cadences or rhythms to get the effects that they consider are suitable for the piece. An example is “A Noiseless Patient Spider” by Walt Whitman. He is known as the father of free verse English poetry. In this poem, although only a simple metaphor is used to mesmerize the readers without employing regular rhyme scheme or rhythm. We can see normal pauses in the poem unlike the typical limitations of metrical feet.
    2. Prose poetry is poetry written in prose instead of using verse but preserving poetic qualities such as heightened imagery, parataxis and emotional effects. A fine example of the form is Baudelaire’s “Be Drunk." The poem tells a story about wanting to be drunk.
    3. Lyric poetry is poetry that has a musical rhythm and their topics often explore romantic feelings or other strong emotions. An example is Louise Bogan’s “Song for the Last Act.”
    •The difference between prose poetry, lyric poetry, and free verse is prose doesn't have musical rhythm like lyric poetry and free verse. The similarity is they all have or represent something through like symbols and etc.

  8. : Lyric poetry is a originally a composition meant for musical accompaniment the term refers to a short poem in which the poet ,the poets persona, or another speakers expression personal feelings.
    : Prose is a form of language that has no formal metrical structure it apples a natural flow of speech and ordinary grammatical structure rather than rhymic structure.
    : free verse is a literary device that can be defined as poetry that is free limitation of regular meter or rhythm and does not rhyme with fixed form
    These poem styles all have something to do with rhythm or some type of music form in it, but they all are different and have different purpose and theme to differentiate the poems.

    Lyric has a composition meant for musical accompaniment when the poet or another speaker expresses personal feelings. Free verse is a literary device that can be defined as poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter and doesn’t rhyme. Prose poetry is written in prose instead of using verses or preserving poetic qualities such as imagery and emotional effects. The main differences are that in free poetry it doesn’t have the type of literary devices that lyric and prose poetry does. The main similarities are that lyric and prose poetry both has emotional/personal feelings in it. A poem that shows lyric poetry is “I Hid My Love” by John Clares. This shows lyric poetry by expressing the poet’s feelings. A poem that shows free verse is “Soonest Moon” by John Ashbury. This shows free verse because it doesn’t have a regular meter and it doesn’t rhyme. A poem that shows prose poetry “Be Drunk” by Baudelaries. This show prose because it has all qualities of imagery. The overall purpose to differentiate the difference between Lyric ,Prose and free poetry.

  10. A Free Verse Poetry is a literary device that can be defined as poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm and and does not rhyme with fixed forms. Such poems are without rhythms and rhyme schemes; do not follow regular rhyme scheme rules and still provide artistic expression. It also allows poets to use alliteration, rhyme, cadences or rhythms to get effects that they consider are suitable for the piece.
    An example of Free Verse is

    Like a skein of loose silk blown against a wall
    She walks by the railing of a path in Kensington Gardens,
    And she is dying piece-meal
    of a sort of emotional anemia.

    And round about there is a rabble
    Of the filthy, sturdy, unkillable infants of the very poor.
    They shall inherit the earth.

    In her is the end of breeding.
    Her boredom is exquisite and excessive…..
    will commit that indiscretion.

    Free verse poetry, prose poetry and lyric poetry both are different types of poetry that do not only have similarities but differences. Free verse poetry is a type of poetry from limitation of regular meter o rhythm. The poet of a free verse poetry do not need to follow any rules and can shape their poem as they desire. Prose poetry lacks line breaks and utilizes techniques common to poetry. Prose poetry also ranges in length. Lyric poetry is meant for musical accompaniment and expressed personal feelings. Free verse poetry and prose poetry do not follow common schemes in writing poetry but they but utilize techniques in poetry. The difference between both is how they arrange their poem. Prose poetry and lyric poetry can both express emotions but their format is completely different. Free verse poetry and lyric poetry both can be read in rhythmical phrases. Free verse poetry and lyric poetry differ because lyric poetry is meant for musical accompaniment while free verse poetry is not truly meant for that but can be expressed that way also.
    “Don’t Let That Horse” by Lawrence Ferlinghetti is an example of free verse poetry. The reason why this poem was written in this format is because the author wanted individuals to be able to interpret the poem how they pleased. Free verse poetry allowed that due to the fact that they could read it with no specific pattern. “The Colonel” by Carolyn Forche is an example of prose poetry because it does not have any breaks but still utilizes techniques in common poetry like imagery. This poem was written in this format since it is somewhat in story form and allows individuals to read this like a story although it is evident it is still a poem. “To Celia” by Ben Jonson is an example of lyric poetry. This poem rhymes and is expressed personal feelings about Celia. The format of this poem allowed the author to tell his story with rhythm and got his point across easier since it somewhat rhymes and might be easier for others to understand.

    Free Verse: have no regular meter and rhythm.
    Prose Poem: a piece of writing in prose having obvious poetic qualities.
    Lyric: originally a composition meant for musical accompaniment.
    The similarities between these three types of poetry is that the poems has like a musical tie.Like for example, free verse is a way to express the poem but can be used into a musical way. The difference is the way they are written. Free verse has no regular meter and has the normal qualities of poetry. Pose poem have many different and complex poetic qualities.
    Barely tolerated, living on the margin
    In our technological society, we were always having to be rescued
    On the brink of destruction, like heroines in Orlando Furioso
    Before it was time to start all over again.
    There would be thunder in the bushes, a rustling of coils,…….
    The whole thing might not, in the end, be the only solution……..
    Came plowing down the course, just to make sure everything was O.K.…
    About how to receive this latest piece of information.
    (Soonest Mended by John Ashbury)
    The purpose of this poem was to describes the effects of technology in our society today. Technology effects us because it ties us in to where we want help.
    A fine example of the form is Baudelaire’s “Be Drunk," which concludes:

    And if sometimes, on the steps of a palace or the green
    grass of a ditch, in the mournful solitude of your room,
    you wake again, drunkenness already diminishing or
    gone, ask the wind, the wave, the star, the bird, the
    clock, everything that is flying, everything that is
    groaning, everything that is rolling, everything that
    is singing, everything that is speaking. . .ask what
    time it is and wind, wave, star, bird, clock will
    answer you: “It is time to be drunk! So as not to be
    the martyred slaves of time, be drunk, be continually
    drunk! On wine, on poetry or on virtue as you wish.”
    This is a good example of prose poem. This poem mean to enjoy life as much as you can because it will eventually wear off. Like being drunk. You can't be drunk forever, so just enjoy before you have your hangover. Do something to remember so your happy with your life.
    I Hid my Love
    BY JOHN CLARE
    I hid my love when young till I
    Couldn't bear the buzzing of a fly;
    I hid my love to my despite
    Till I could not bear to look at light:
    I dare not gaze upon her face
    But left her memory in each place;
    Where'er I saw a wild flower lie
    I kissed and bade my love good-bye.

    I met her in the greenest dells,
    Where dewdrops pearl the wood bluebells;
    The lost breeze kissed her bright blue eye,
    The bee kissed and went singing by,
    A sunbeam found a passage there,
    A gold chain round her neck so fair;
    As secret as the wild bee's song
    She lay there all the summer long.

    I hid my love in field and town
    Till e'en the breeze would knock me down;
    The bees seemed singing ballads o'er,
    The fly's bass turned a lion's roar;
    And even silence found a tongue,
    To haunt me all the summer long;
    The riddle nature could not prove
    Was nothing else but secret love.
    This poems shows how the character hides his love because he does not believe she love him as well. And he does not want to be turned down because he wants to know for sure if she love him.

    Free verse is a literary device that an poet uses when he is trying to write without structure and without using words that rhyme. There is no ABAB, ACBC, etc. nor is there any “doe foe” or “ditch snitch”. A Prose poem is a poem that uses a form of language that shows a grammatical structure and a smooth flow of speech instead of following a structure) but it still has some type of poetic quality, like imagery and emotional effects. A lyric poem is when the author, authors persona, or another speaker is writing in order to express their personal feelings.
    The differences are a free verse is ranting, a prose poem is a rant that has some sense, and a lyric poem is an emotional rant. They are similar because they all deal with rants.
    The Laboratory by Robert Browning is an Lyric poem, you can tell because he says I and that’s how you know its about him, making it about his emotions.

    Free verse poetry is a literary devic ethat can be defined as poetry that is free from limitation of regular meter or rhythm and does noy rhyme with fixed forms. A free verse poem has no rhythm.
    Prose poem maintains a poeti quality. Prose poem can range in length from a few lines to reveal page long and it may explore a limitless array of styles and subjects.
    Lyric poem meant for musical accompaniment.
    The differences between lyric, prose, and free verse poem is that they are formatted differently and dont have the same concepts.
    They are similar because they all are connected to poetry in some way but just have different formats.
    An example is of a free verse poem is A Noiseless Patient Spider by Walt Whtman.
    The purpose of this peom is to dicuss the movement of a spider and the moves he make they described it using feelings and descriptive details.
    An example of a prose poem is Baudelaire's ''Be Drunk''. The purpose was to discuss being drunk as a good thing. They say you can do more whie being drunk and it can take you places that you never visualized before. When you are drunk everything around you seems so different.

      Delete
  17. Free Verse: Poetry that doesn't follow a rhyme scheme nor rhyme with fixed forms. A poet can give the poem his or her own shape and still provide artistic expression. Alliteration, rhyme, and other devices can still be used. It has no regular meter, shape, nor rhyme scheme. An example of this is "Come Slowly, Eden" by Emily Dickinson. The poem's purpose is to describe a bee getting nectar. This being wrote as a free verse poem gives it artistic expression to this very idea.

    Prose: A poem that tells more of a story. It doesn't have line breaks, but it has poetic quality. It uses fragmentation, compression, repetition, and rhyme. Prose can be a few lines to several pages long, has a limitless array of styles and subjects, and uses paragraphs. An example of this is "I discovered a journal..." by Gary Young. The poem's purpose is to describe what a father is reading in a girl's journal. It being written as a prose poem allows it to better tell the story.

    Lyric: A short poem that is used to express personal feelings. It used musical rhythm. An example of this is "I Hid my Love" by John Clare. This poem's purpose is to express the hidden love that he had felt for a girl. It being written as a lyric poem allowed the poet to express his strong emotions.

    A lyric poem , a free verse poem and a Prose Poem are different forms of poetry. These different forms of poem are different but also similiar. A lyric poem is set to music and expresses personal feelings. A free verse poem is free from limitations, it does not follow a regular rhyme scheme. A prose poem had no rhythm or beat to it, it puts a story in a poem form. These three types of forms are similiar because they tell a story and are use for expression. A prose poem and a free verse poem are similar because they both dont follow a rhyme scheme. Come Slowly by Emily Dickson is a example of a free verse because it doesnt follow any specific rules and its not structured but it still completes the purpose of telling a story. A example of a Prose poem is When We Two Parted by Lord Byron he tells about him and his lover parted ways , the poem was a story but in a poem structure. A example of a lyric poem is To Anthea , who may command him Anything by Robert Herrick, it completes its purpose because it has a musical flow to it and expresses the poets feelings of him wanting love.

    FREE VERSE: a type of poetry that is open form.
    It doesn't use consistent meter patterns, rhyme schemes or any musical pattern. Usually the poet can shape his/her poem to make it a natural flow without rhythm and using a rhyme scheme.
    Ex: Soonest Mended by John Ashbury
    In this poem, the poet didn't have to use a rhyme scheme or ads rhythm to it. The way the poet put his words made it have a natural ring to it.
    PROSE POEM: Anything that doesn't have a poetic meter (rythym) to it. It lacks in line break and can be small, medium, and large. It's basically a type of poem that tells a story without rhyming and rhythm in it. It has some poetic quality in it and has imagery in these story like poems.
    EX: The poem "Be Drunk" by Baudelaire is an example of a prose poem because it's giving us a picture on how being drunk is a good thing and how you're different when you're drunk etc. It told a story in this poem and it gave me a image.
    LYRIC POEM: this type of poem is when the poet express their personal feelings and emotions in it. It has a musical rhythm to it.
    EX: The poem "I hid my love" by John Clare. This is a lyrical poem because it expresses the hidden love and feelings that he had for a woman.
    The difference between prose, free verse, and lyric poem is that a lyrical poem has a musical rhythm and poetic meter to it unlike prose and free verse. Prose is more like a story and free verse is a poem that has no rythym or rhyme scheme ,but has a natural flow to it.
    They are similar because they are all poems and they all have a natural flow to it.

    Each type of poem tells a meaning or a theme. Poems describes how you feel about something or what your going through life.

    Free verse poetry is when it is going free style, it is unrhymed with no meter, it doesn't have any set rules. For example "This is Just to Say" by William Carlos Williams. A prose poem tells a short story form like a poem. Prose poem doesn't have a rhyme nor meter. It doesn't follow the poetic devices. And a lyric poem is a song that haves a beat, a rhyme, and follows the meter. It describes a feeling/emotion ; it doesn't tells a story, but creates a mood through vivid images/pictures. An example for lyric poem is like Lil Wayne songs. He's a good poetic song writer.

    A free verse is a literary device that can be defined as poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm and does not rhyme with fixed forms. Prose poetry is poetry written in prose instead of using verse but preserving poetic qualities such as heightened imagery, parataxis and emotional effects. Lastly a lyric poem refers to a short poem in which the poet, the poet’s persona, or another speaker expresses personal feelings. These three poems are similar and different in many ways. These three poems are similar because they don’t have a specific structure. The prose and lyric poem are alike because they can both be very short or very long they also have many different styles. They are all different because a free verse poem doesn’t have any rhyme schemes a prose poem does have poetic qualities like rhyme and lastly a lyric poem has musical qualities and deals a lot with emotions. The poem “Don’t Let That Horse…” by Lawrence Ferlinghetti is an example of a free verse because this poem has no grammar or structure to it this can contributes to the meaning because Ferlinghetti wanted people to get different meanings out of his poem not just a certain one which is why the poem doesn’t have any structure and an example of the meaning of this poem can be freedom. The reader can determine what it means to them which is why this poem is a free verse. The poem “The Colonel” by Carolyn Forche is an example of a prose poem because it has no specific structure, it has lack of line breaks, it;s a long poem, and in this specific poem there is no rhyme. The author uses a prose poem because it is straightforward and it tells the story they want to tell which is the purpose of why she used a prose poem so we get her story in a straightforward way. The poem “I Hid my Love” by John Clare is an example of a lyric poem. It has a type of melody to it, it is longer than a normal poem, we see the authors emotion, and lastly it has a poetic format. The purpose of the poem is the authors emotions of how he hid his love because he expressed his emotions it makes this poem a lyric which is probably why the author picked this type of poem to express his feelings.

    Free Verse poetry is a poem that is made without rhyming. Lyric poems are poems that relates to Odes, but is written like a piece of music. Also, Prose poems are poems that doesn't break lines that is associated with poetry, but it does provide techniques that is common to poetry. The main differences and similarities of these types of poems is that they all tie into the making of a(an) complete poem(s). An example for a Free Verse poem is: "Soonest Mended" by John Ashbury. To add, an example for a Lyric poem is: "I Hid My Love" by John Clare. Also, an example for a Prose poem is: "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Caroll. The overall purpose for "Soonest Mended" is to express how it would feel to receive something new and valuable, and if it was to ever be destroyed, there is no turning back. For "I Hid My Love", the overall meaning is for someone to hide their true feelings away from someone they find really special, and until they find the right time to tell the special someone, they will keep their secrets hidden away forever. Lastly, the overall meaning for "Jabberwocky" is to beware the son named Jabberwock, for that he is bad dude, and he will unleash his sword skills at anyone that have a sign of evilness.

    Free verse is a literary device that can be to be found as poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm. Lyric poem composition meant for musical accompaniment. Prose poem is a poem essentially appears as prose, but reads like poetry.
    The nation difference between these three types of poems is that free verse poems you write them with out rhythm and the other two you kind of have to in order for the reader to understand earth it's trying to mean. The similarities to the three types of poems it's that asl have to be us in a literary way.
    Example for free verse poem "A noiseless patient spider,
    I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated," "A Noiseless Patient Spider" by Walt Whitman. The purpose of this is that person is noise and moves alot. A prose poem example is "you wake again, drunkenness already diminishing or
    gone, ask the wind, the wave, the star, the bird, the
    clock, everything that is flying, everything that is
    groaning, everything that is rolling, everything that
    is singing, everything that is speaking. . .ask what," Baudelaire's "Be Drunk," the meaning of this is that everything is flowing through his/her head of sound and looks. A lyric poem example "Now that I have your face by heart, I look ," "Now that I have your voice by heart, I read," By Louise Bogan "Song for the Last Act" is comparing your heart to what you hear and see a old thing that will never leave.

    There are three types of poetry and they are lyric, free verse, and prose. Lyric poetry is when the poem is accompanied by musical support. An example of Lyric poetry is " Song for the Last Act by Louise Bogan". The purpose of this poem was to show how someone can love a person in their life. Free verse is you have a poem that doesn't particularly have fixed forms of rhymes or just doesn't right at all. This gives poets the privilege to shape the poem of their desires. But still allows poets to have and use alliteration, rhymes, cadences or rhymes to get the effects that they think are suitable for the piece. An example of Free Verse poetry is the poem "A Noiseless Patient Spider by Walt Whitman". The purpose of this poem was to express the vacancy of a spider in in its own little world of faint space and movements. Prose poetry is a piece of writing in prose- written or spoken language in its ordinary form, without metrical structure- having obvious poetic qualities, including intensity, compactness, prominent rhymes and imagery. An example of Prose Poem is " Be Drunk by Baudelaire". The purpose of this poem was to inform the reader that the best way to drown your sorrows is to be drunk on anything that you like that doesn't just involve alcohol. Furthermore, the purpose of this poem was to tell the readers to expect a crucial hangover, but to get rid of it to be drunk again.The main difference between the three types of poetry is that they all have a unique meaning for a certain types of poem. The main similarity between the the three is that they all follow it of writing the poem in expression towards how the poem is written is a certain form of categorized writing.
